If the past 25 years of watching politics has shown us anything, it’s that Hillary Clinton will say and do anything to get elected and hold on to power. Her recent comments in this video show that she is also willing to selectively remember only history that serves her interests and, if that fails, just make stuff up.
“Twice now in the past 20 years a Democratic president has had to come in and clean up the mess left behind.” Seriously?
She conveniently left out the mess that was left for Ronald Reagan in 1981 by a Democratic president. The Iran hostage crisis, double-digit inflation, waiting in lines at the gas pump and high unemployment come to mind. The Gipper did a pretty good job cleaning up Carter’s malaise.
While the economy may have been in good shape when the Clintons left office in 2001, the mirage of the dot- com bubble that had boosted the economy in those years was about to burst. In the last years of the Clinton administration, the 9/11 hijackers were already in the U.S. and making final preparations before launching their attack. Bill Clinton had been offered Osama bin Laden’s head on a platter and declined. The CIA had bin Laden on video in their sights but never got the green light from Clinton to fire. It was left to George W. Bush to “come in and clean up the mess left behind” by the Clintons amid the rubble of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
Another mess Bill and Hillary left behind was the tattered image of the presidency, which was once an office that commanded great respect and moral authority. The Clintons put an end to that with numerous scandals ending in -gate, impeachment and a stained blue dress.
Hillary also ignored an obvious flaw in her argument: what will Barack Obama’s successor inherit? A mess that is exponentially larger than anything he had to deal with. By every metric, the country is in worse shape now than it was in 2008. The next president will have to spend a great deal of time just fixing everything Obama has broken.
No wonder the Democrats are counting on the millennials so much in 2016. When your supporters don’t know history, it’s so much easier to make it up.
