The truth about why House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) dropped from the race as House Speaker may never be told by mainstream media (MSM), but it is not because of his gaffe on Hillary and Benghazi.

MSM, seeing an opportunity bail Hillary Clinton out of potential criminal charges, has been all over McCarthy since he made those statements. They called for ending the investigation of the House committee on Benghazi, saying McCarthy’s comments prove it is nothing more than a political witch hunt of Clinton.

Immediately after news broke of McCarthy’s withdrawal, MSM shifted their attention to the House Freedom Caucus, a group of 40 conservative Republicans in the House of Representatives. MSM portrayed them as group of right wing zealots bent on causing civil war within the GOP. The caucus was opposed to McCarthy and would have prevented him from getting the 218 votes needed to be Speaker. There are 247 Republicans in the House. As reported in CNN:

“A source close to McCarthy told CNN the decision to drop out came down to ‘numbers, pure and simple,’ adding that ‘he had the votes to win the conference vote, but there just wasn’t a path to 218’ — the number of votes needed to lock down the speakership on the House floor.”

While it is true that McCarthy could not have become Speaker without the support of the House Freedom Caucus, a group marginalized and ignored by the GOP establishment, the better question is why were they opposed to him?

Spoiler Alert: It wasn’t Benghazi or causing a GOP civil war.

It was about his character. Charles C. Johnson, an investigative journalist and founder of GotNews.com, reported a story in January of this year of an affair McCarthy was having with Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-N.C.). When asked about the rumor, McCarthy and Ellmers refused to comment.

Johnson would not relent. He targeted his stories to the congressional districts of Ellmers and McCarthy. Sources within those districts got back to him with additional information. As his investigation grew, other websites and publications became interested in the story. Curiously, after McCarthy’s announcement, Ellmer’s lawyers slapped GotNews.com with a “cease and desist” order.

When current Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, announced he was stepping down, conservative Republicans across the country saw an opportunity to have someone new who would better represent their values. Small and large groups of people started movements to draft Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC) and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), among others.

One small online church in Nevada called “Pray For US – Pray For The United States” began campaigning for Gowdy. Not because they opposed McCarthy, but they were pro-Gowdy. What they found researching McCarthy disgusted them. The group utilized a FaxGram system, sending personalized and signed letters by each sender to each member of Congress.

Christians have been catching on to the tactics of the Left Wing MSM. There was a reason MSM didn’t pounce on this story when it was apparently the most open secret in Washington, DC. As editor of Pray for US Bob Mallory wrote:

“’Anytime the Democrat Party-controlled media sits on a story for 10 months, you know they’re holding onto it until it will benefit them the most,’ said Mallory. ‘I could see this one playing out immediately and dubbed it the ‘October Surprise of 2016’. We know this story would suddenly be ‘discovered’ at this time next year and used to discredit all of the Christians running for office, including whomever the GOP nominee for the White House is.’”

Kudos to the many small groups of conservatives and Christians who stood up and made their voices heard. They refused to fall into the Left’s trap and have shown that content of character is what matters most. For those who may not realize it, the Speaker position is second in succession to the presidency, only after the Vice-President. His or her character matters.

With the Leftist MSM continuing to unload all their bullets on the Republican presidential candidates, this is one less they’ll have for the Republican controlled House.
