Obama as Cool Hand Luke

obama_stressed_reuters_fileThe movie Cool Hand Luke may provides one of the best metaphors for Obama’s pathology, and his current feverish attempts at selling DeathCare to America. His speech to Congress reminded me of what the Captain of Road Prison 36 said to the new prisoners:

“You run one time, you got yourself a set of chains. You run twice you got yourself two sets. You ain’t gonna need no third set, ’cause you gonna get your mind right.”

If that is not a great reference to ObamaCare, then I just don’t know what is. Hopefully we are able to get Obama’s mind right?

Obama reminds me of the main character Luke Jackson played by Paul Newman. Luke is a rebel bringing “hope and change” to the prison chain gang. Luke, like Obama, just doesn’t know when to give up, like when Luke wrankles the prison’s toughest inmate, Dragline, portrayed by George Kennedy.

The two inmates battle it out in the prison yard, in what is not much of a fight. Dragline beats the crap out of Luke, knocking him down repeatedly.

Dragline: Stay down. You’re beat.

Luke: You’re gonna hafta kill me…
[struggles back to his feet]

The scene repeats until finally Dragline just walks away, tired of beating a senseless Luke. How many times does healthcare need to be defeated for Obama to understand that he’s beaten? Perhaps he expect us to just walk away?

The main backdrop of the movie is Luke’s need to change the status quo. He is in prison, however he doesn’t want what prison represents for prisoners—normality. For Obama the normality of America, our traditions and ideals need to be changed. He has his vision of America, that he feels supersedes what America has represented until now.

For Luke this means escape. Despite the Captain’s warning, he does just that. He is quickly caught, and life in the camp begins anew, just more difficult for Luke.

Boss Paul: That ditch is Boss Kean’s ditch. And I told him that dirt in it’s your dirt. What’s your dirt doin’ in his ditch?

Luke: I don’t know, Boss.

Boss Paul: You better get in there and get it out, boy.

Obama has to be feeling much the same. His job approval ratings dropping, so he gains more resolve. But the job just keeps getting tougher. At this rate, Obama will need a backhoe to get all his dirt out of Boss’ hole.

If you wonder sometimes how Obama comes up with his policies, then this scene where Luke eats fifty hard boiled eggs may explain it best:

Dragline: Why you got to go and say fifty eggs for? Why not thirty-five or thirty-nine?

Luke: I thought it was a nice round number.

Obama, like Luke seems to create fires where there are none. I believe this is based on his idea that being busy equates to accomplishing something. This might explain why as state and US Senator, Obama sponsored or co-sponsored over 1600 pieces of legislation and passed less than five.

Luke toes the line for a little while, but eventually the urge to escape hits him and he’s off again. He sends pictures of himself having a blast, and the inmates live vicariously through him. Luke is ultimately recaptured. He realizes his fate; that he will be in that prison camp for the rest of his life.

The inmates crowd around their champion, waiting, wondering, wanting. They ask Luke about the picture he sent with the girl, and Luke reveals that the picture was a fake. The inmates don’t want to believe it. They need to believe in Luke. They continue pestering him, wanting Luke to “say it ain’t so.” Luke becomes fed up, finally saying:

Luke: Oh come on. Stop beatin’ it. Get out there yourself. Stop feedin’ off me. Get out of here. I can’t breathe. Give me some air.

Here’s the wrap:

Luke Eating EggsIf you want to capture the core of the Obama administration, recall the scene where Luke wins a game of poker in a bluff:

Dragline: Nothin’. A handful of nothin’. You stupid mullet head. He beat you with nothin’. Just like today when he kept comin’ back at me – with nothin’.

Luke: Yeah, well, sometimes nothin’ can be a real cool hand.

Though an engaging character, in the end Luke brought nothing new to the prison, except empty dreams. No real hope and change, just the vision of such that each prisoner needed. A brief break from the push and the shove of regular life.

Obama might be one Cool Hand Luke…

That’s my rant!

Great analysis. Obama, Pelosi, and all will never give up. Never. But unlike Dragline we can't just walk away. We do and we will pay for it in the form of a totalitarian government. They're just waiting for us to slip up. To drop our attention, to look the other way

And in the end, even though Luke was so cool and great eye candy he turned out after all to be just another loser. Obama, just give it up.

As I watched the speech, I watched President BO (President out of respect for the office; BO because his agenda stinks) trying to assessess his feelings. He seemed almost detached from what he was saying, as though he didn't want to say everything again.

He kept promising specifics and delivering used generalities…then calling them specifics.

And does he not realize how broke Medicare, Medicaid and the VA are and how inefficeiently they are run?

He's still a Sophomore.

I heard you on Glenn Beck. Excellent points and I was encouraged at your work. I would hope you would look at our Latham website for ideas of programs to help animals, children and families.
Latham is 91 years old – and quietly helps people to learn the importance of showing kindness to animals. That simple first step builds a solid foundation on which relationships with family, neighbors and community are built.
Please do not confuse Latham with a "rights organization", animal, child, or other – We are simply The Latham Foundation for the Promotion of Humane Education
and work with a very broad spectrum of citizens.

It's the whole red-light-turn-right mentality begotten by a society that gets its "news" in youtube soundbites. In most states, you can make a right turn at a red light, you just have to come to a stop and yield to green light traffic. So rather than wait the 2 minutes for the light to turn green and continue in the right direction, we all turned right just to keep the car moving and avoid the wait. If we keep doing that, we'll be in circles… and it won't be Cool Hand Luke… we'll be the Griswalds on a round-about checking out Big Ben and Parliament LOL Either way, I think there is a LOT of voters' remorse out there.

Great analogy! Missed you this last week! Wish I could have seen you on Beck. There is a man with cajones on TV.

While I think Odumba is really dumb he is really just doing the dirty work for higher ups in Dumbarats. ( Soros, Pelosi, and Dean and gang ).

While in High School we had this guy in a Frat ( Middle class gang) who was s odumb he did whatever the leader told him to do. HE stabbed people with disecting prongs in boys room and the like. One day he spit in my hair ( I had a fro that the Jacksons would have been proud of in the 70's and bigger too. I though that is was a joke so I challenged him to do it again. ( I was 5'7" 120 soaking wet he was 6'2" 205. ) Well he came up to me while I was sitting with friends and he did it again. I told him he was dead and he should hit me first. gave him 3 chances and flattened him with one punch. He did some back for more and got hit 10 mores times. They had to pull me away. I never got in another fight in HS nobody wanted to mess with this mad Sicilian. When the Priciple told me I should have come to him I said why so I could be jumped when walking home from school or some other activity. He knew I was right and while suspending me as he dad to I never got in trouble and he went to the police with the other clown. I had to fight if I was ever going to be rid of being bullied.

I think that Odumba and his crowd will just keep coming at us with all these horrible bills to try and kill this nation like ACORN and his commy smoked salmon crowd want to do. We need to get tough as nice does not work with bullies. this is also why we should defend Joe Wilson who only was speaking an obvious truth as Odumba was spouting such big porkies. If we try to beat this crowd by being nice we are doomed as they have no shame. This is going to be a bare knuckle fight and we have to be in it to win. and that means hitting hard and not making nice.

We have the same problem here in Ireland the politics i so corrupt that they can do the most vile things and they will not step down. We need to throw them all out here. Its a racket. we need to weed out many Republicans as they do not realize what the stakes are and rather keep the spoils of power rather than do the right thing.

My rant from the Emerald Isle. passing you book and this off to some of the people here who really do not know anything about American politics here. Hope you geta call from an Irish radio station or Publisher soon!

Hi Kevin,

I've seen you on Beck's program twice now. Keep up the great work.

I originally posted the following on your blogspot. A few other have posted there too. I have given them the heads-up.
——————————————————

"What we've got here is… a failure to communicate."

Besides the usual blah, blah, blah, I also heard yet more lies, lies, lies (and a well placed "you lie!") in his near hour long speech.

Of course the Communist News Network did some polling (spinning) and said that 2 out of 3 Americans changed their minds after listening.

The only problem is that 45 percent of those polled were Democrats and the other 18 percent were Republicans.

They may pass some version of this monstrosity sooner or later, but Republicans would do well to let the Democrats own this disaster if it does.

I caught the tail end of of you on Beck tonight. Please post a link to the entire video if you have it. I hope your book sales sky rocket!

Keep fighting the good fight,

You sir are a great American, and a huge breath of fresh Air. I am really hoping to see you get some sort of show on Fox, whether its daily or even just a weekly 30 minute show. I have been involved with politics for the last 22 years but have rarely commented or bloged etc. The one town hall lady said it best “you have awoken a sleeping giant”. A huge percentage of the country calls themselves American, only the very noisy and vocal remainder use labels. I do and have not ever cared about anyones race, religion etc. But I recently have been on a quest to locate and spread the word of many “minority” (again hate the label but the left insists on labels) conservatives. We all need to help great Americans like yourself get the real word out, and show our support. I hope you know how much real Americans love you man.

and i am utterly confused by this line: “Though an engaging character, in the end Luke brought nothing new…No real…change.” I mean, isn’t this what t-bag folk want? i thought it was the terrifying specter of usurped power, fundamental transformations of the us government, radical new directions, replacing the white house with a mosque (as your t-shirt asserts), etc. that we are all supposed to be so scared of. i’ll add this blog entry to the seemingly endless list of things that has prevented most people in this country from making any sense whatsoever of all of this t-bag sound and fury.

I was just curious as to the hipocracy of this congress, if Obama lied while delivering his speech to congress are they going to cause a stir just like Nancy Pelosi did when she claimed the CIA lied to her. being as they claim that it is a crime to lie to congress does the president get a pass on lying whereas the CIA doesnt.

George Cota says:

Although in a way I find your analogy to Cool Hand Luke compelling, I rather fear that (at least in his own mind) our President sees himself more in the role of the ‘benevolent’ Captain, and that he’s proposing to shackle US (we the people/convicts) with more and more chains simply to help us “get our minds right.”

Now, everyone, using your best Strother Martin voice…

“What we have here is a FAILURE to COMMUNICATE!”

Each and every one of us MUST keep punching, and refuse to conform to this radical marxist groupthink.

God help us all.

George C.

p.s. Hey, that might make a pretty good sign. Obama’s face on Strother Martin’s (the Captain’s) body and the slogan: “What we have here is a FAILURE to COMMUNICATE!”

hmm…

Another very strong scene from Cool Hand Luke is where the blood hounds were chasing him and the prison car pulls up and the guard pulls the dead hound dog from the trunk. He says ” Look Boss, look what he did to Blue. He ran him to death. Blood Hound Dog was played by the middle class of America. How many times do we have to run and chase a fleeing and uncontrollable President?

George C. says:
September 15, 2009 at 2:06 am

@Proudhon (1/4)

Thank you Proudhon,

I’m rather fond of Luke myself and would hate to think of any of us in the roles of the foul Boss Paul, the horrific Boss Godfrey (the Man with No Eyes), or the patronizing and emotionally self-mutilated Captain (let alone the sickeningly sycophantic Dog Boy, ).

What I have always appreciated about the Luke character is the fierce will with which he asserts his own individuality and identity throughout the picture, refusing to be bound by the idiotic strictures that his so-called ‘betters’ are bound & determined to inflict upon him. We here that he had been a decorated war hero and promoted to the rank of sergeant, but mustered out as a buck private. “I guess I was just marking time, Cap’n,” he says. And remember what Luke was sent up for in the first place, his ostensible ‘Crime’? Cutting the heads off parking meters while drunk.

His ultimate penalty?

Death.

But it was his identity, a free man (and this is his *true* crime), for which they really killed him.

George C. says:
September 15, 2009 at 2:07 am

@Proudhon (2/4)

Throughout his imprisonment Luke remains true to himself, not in some robotic or ‘tower-of-iron-will’ two-dimensional way, but in one both utterly and immensely human. A sort of a modern (not POST-modern!) Thomas Paine, who in the end was himself ostracized even by his revolutionary compatriots for the dual heresies of deism (read ‘atheism’) and free-thought.

While men and women who have the kind of personal integrity our two examples exhibit are, I fear, becoming more and more rare, they are yet to be emulated, celebrated, even exalted in these grim times. Can you imagine anyone else at court referring to Napoleon as “the completest charlatan that ever existed,” as he launched the imperial dictatorship?

Why, with that kind of integrity one might, against all odds, through the storm-swept and raging sea, pull one’s self and one’s fellows through to the sandy shore, wipe the sweat and encrusted salt from raw and blistered skin and, with a wry smile, utter simply:

Sometimes nuthin’ can be a real cool hand.”

And mean it.

George C. says:
September 15, 2009 at 2:08 am

@Proudhon (3/4)

On a lighter note, I’m also reminded of the the old ‘Not Ready For Prime Time Players’ sketch when Strother Martin hosted SNL.

Bill Murray (Luke) and Garrett Morris (Alvin) have been sent to a bi-lingual ‘French Camp’ to study during their Summer vacation. Everyone is wearing berets and those stupid wide-horizontal-striped shirts that I suppose French sailors wore at one time when who should walk up but Le Capitán (!), Strother Martin, who proceeds to lay down the law to the unfortunate group. ‘It’s this rule,’ he barks, “It’s that rule,” as he explains the draconian regime of the camp: berets to be worn at a tilt, no semi-soft cheeses in the bunks, etc. And anyone who doesn’t get their mind right “spends a night in The Box!” (with headset and study tapes of course).

Naturally Luke refuses the compulsory spoken French, rebels, and runs off into the woods that very night.

Suddenly, the yelps of howling dogs echoes through the night. The hounds are after him!

He runs, fleeing desperately he knows not where, but to no avail.

“He’s got him, Boss! Ol’ Blue’s got him!”

George C. says:
September 15, 2009 at 2:10 am

@Proudhon (4/4)

Luke is marched sullenly back into the camp under the harsh and watchful eyes of the dour guardsmen and is flanked we see, by a brace of white, perfectly-coiffed, French poodles.

He stands at drooping before Le Capitán and knows it is to be a hellish night in the box for him.

The other students/inmates are both confused and saddened by his obstinacy. Why will he not submit? “A line! A phrase! A single spoken word will be enough to save you,” their eyes seem to say, but he will not relent. He will not be broken so easily. Exasperated beyond all reason, Le Capitán is infuriated by his strange and unprecedented willfulness.
