 //  Sharpton Sings the Oldies

Posted on Wednesday, September 1st, 2010 by Kevin Jackson

Al Sharpton has spoken out about Beck’s 8-28 march on Washington, as he rocked the ‘60’s bouffant hair style to match his ‘60’s rhetoric.

Unlike Dr. King’s march, Sharpton’s “Reclaim the Dream” march had to ride on the coattails of a white man’s march. Based on attendance at the Sharpton event, a lot of black folks don’t feel the need to reclaim the dream.

That didn’t stop Sharpton from telling the world that Beck is distorting what Dr. King’s dream was about. According to Sharpton, Beck is trying to steal the dream! And who is better to step up to reclaim the dream, but the top law enforcement officer in the Liberal black community!

If Beck is allowed to steal the dream, he wouldn’t know what to do with it!  After all, white folks can’t know what Dr. King meant. Who does Beck think he is; a black hustler?!

Sharpton declared that the people who are marching on 8-28 are having an “anti-government march.”  Wasn’t Dr. King’s march an anti-government march?

The reason King’s action were anti-government is that laws that had been established by government to prevent blacks from voting, to obtain proper housing, and to deter blacks from achieving the American Dream were all established by governmentDemocrat governments!

King wanted to change government, not make blacks increasingly dependent on government.  King wanted blacks to receive a fair opportunity to exercise their God-given—not government-given— rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. He needed government to right some wrongs, but King did not want more government.

King’s protest was in recognition of one such act of discrimination of Marian Anderson, a famous black Opera singer, who was the object of discrimination.  Her treatment represented exactly what King was fighting against.

Though Anderson had an amazing singing career, performing all over the world, in racially charged America of her time, there were constant reminders by Democrats that she was black.

When Anderson returned from her European tour, she was denied permission to sing at Constitution Hall by the Daughters of the American Revolution, and then again, when she requested to use the auditorium of a white public school.

Because of Eleanor Roosevelt, Walter White...

of the NAACP, and Anderson’s manager Sol Hurok, Marian Anderson was allowed to perform on Easter Sunday on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. What a tribute to the man who began the emancipation of black people.  75,000 people were said to have seen that concert, as millions more listened on radio.

King’s goal was to bring civil rights and economic issues to national attention, beyond the Civil Rights bill that was under consideration by the Kennedy administration. King realized that government was not going to be the solution, and took his cause the people. King’s referendum on racism was so powerful that ultimately LBJ would be forced to acknowledge the “uppityness” of the Negro, as he would go on to create the InGrate Society which would “keep those n*ggers voting Democrat for 200 years!”

Here’s the wrap:

Black people who believe Sharpton would be better off playing the Nigerian lottery. The odds of winning that lottery are certainly better than getting even a nickel’s worth of good from Sharpton.

Sharpton and his ilk who are the one’s distorting Dr. King’s dream.  Representative John Lewis, Democrat oft touted for his participation in the Civil Rights’ movement, said back in the ‘60’s,

“For the party of Kennedy is also the party of Eastland. The party of Javits is also the party of Goldwater. Where is our party? Where is the political party that will make it unnecessary to march on Washington?”

That party is the Tea Party, John Lewis!

Sharpton would never admit that the group that created Dr. King was Democrats—racist to their core.  It was they who had set up all the programs that dehumanized and disenfranchised blacks.  Sharpton and other so-called black leaders have been sleeping with the enemy for decades.

Beck’s march on Washington provides Sharpton a target—white meat—to blame, and a white man’s back to jump on. It makes no difference to Sharpton that Beck has NOTHING to do with the oppression of blacks…in any decade! Sharpton can see his livelihood slipping away with the Tea Party movement, and he sees Beck as a potential meal ticket.

That’s my rant!

Dr. King taught me to love all my brothers and sisters , to be color blind , and promote equality for all, I never heard him try to divide us, he was a Uniter . Al Sharpton uses race as a divider , he has taken from blacks and will continue to do so to promote himself . The fact he promotes a political party that has held blacks back disturbs me , especially because he has that word Reverend in front of his name, is that for tax purposes ? because I take the word as meaning someone with love and compassion for all.

And, Dr. King did not have an ounce of hatred in his bones. Sharpton seems to be full of hatred. I am old enough that I got to listen to Dr. Kings' speaches back in the early 60's, and I loved them. By the way, I am also from the South. I knew he was a spiritual man the first time I heard him speak. Who couldn't, that calls themselves Christianf? It was a terrible day when his life was cut short.

Great post Kevin. To me Sharpton never seemed to want to heal any wounds between the races, rather throw salt into the wounds instead. I think he actually needs racism to justify himself and to turn a profit.

Kevin, fabulous! As always, you are right on the money. I hope that more people (of all races) will see the light…sooner, than later! God bless!

Thank you for a thoughtful rant. If Rev Sharpton REALLY wanted to realize Rev. King's dream, he would have marched that group from his rally to the steps of the Lincoln Memorial placing their hands into the hands of the people at the 8/28 rally. That would have (I pray)healed this country and given freedom to ALL. Al Sharpton lost an opportunity to be one of the leader to bring to fruition MLK dream. Even though we still have work to do, we, black, white, yellow and red could have joined hands as brothers and sisters of this world. Al Sharpton missed a blessing and took the blessing from many others.

Well said, Kevin!

I watched most of Beck's Restoring Honor rally on C-SPAN and then caught the first hour or so of Sharpton's Reclaim the Dream rally. Talk about a study in contrast! The gathering at the Lincoln Memorial was full of love, faith, hope, and charity. Very uplifting. On the other hand, many of Sharpton's guest speakers (about 30 of them, who were each allotted 3 minutes to speak) were angry and critical.

Beck's rally was, as advertised, nonpolitical. Sharpton's rally was highly political, touting many liberal causes.

The most disturbing speaker I saw at Sharpton's gathering was Jaime Contreras (president of one of the SEIU locals). Mr. Contreras is one angry, hate-filled man.

“It’s a shame what’s happening at the Lincoln Memorial. Shame on them! We are here to let those folks on the Mall know they don’t represent the dream!” Contreras said, cheered on by purple-shirted SEIU members in the audience. “They sure as hell don’t represent me! They represent hate mongering and angry white people!”

Thank you, Kevin, for your insightful article.

Thank you Kevin for bringing sanity to the table, if we all looked at Sharpton and that pack of lying wolves for examples of America's pulse, morals, and principles we would be highly misled. I don't know why it took me so long to get on your blog but glad awareness finally slapped a touch of reality into me.
love your book and will order the second one soon.
You, my dear sir, make me proud to be an American, Thank you and God bless..

Too bad he ruined the day with bashing Beck instead of turning the people's hearts back to God. That's what Dr. King did and Beck honored about the special day and speech. It was and still is a dream for all Americans, whites don't need to be excluded because of the color of their skin.

Still Sugar, you need to get slapped right back to the real reality!!! Black on Black hate is what really has us oppressed as a people….light better than dark, house niggas vs field niggas, drug dealers and corporate america, and such. I hope you one day see Beck and the rest for what they really are….As for Kevin…..someone just needs to shut this shiggity down! Everybody wants to be somebody, and unless you have GOD you are nobody anyway! If you don't have something positive to say then keep your mouth shut!!! Freedom of Speech has truly gotten out of hand!!! I don't recall seeing any of the other presidents bonding with their kids in the water on vacation!!! Their are enough people against us…..learn to stand together and put aside your petty differences!!!!

I can only think you haven't actually read ANYTHING posted here. Your comments are nonsensical and have absolutely no base in the reality of the words typed by anyone else above, including the article written by Mr. Jackson. You seem to be the one obsessing about "petty differences."

Mr. Jackson,

An insighful and erudite piece, as usual. When are you going to run for office? :)

It's about time someone expose Sharpton for who he really is to the black community. People like him want to always point a finger at someone white, usually a Republican, for the problems blacks have. Some of these problems come from within the black community and since I've been paying more attention to what's happening in this country, it seems the Democratic Party has been just as oppressive as any other party.

Well Said… What's sad is MLK's dream of Blacks and Whites coming together has really occurred, it's been happening for a long time, but if Ol Al and Jesse admitted it, they'd be unemployed. I honestly believe if MLK were alive today, he'd be YOUR friend, he'd be Beck's friend, he'd be a tea party speaker and he'd be a force in the conservative movement. His dream, his actions, his goals are the goals of true conservatism… The individual regardless of race, is responsible for their actions, is able to produce and contribute their own happiness uninhibited by GOVERNMENT.

Good job Bill, now we have to get your message to his highness "THE REVEREND Al Sharpton"!

Bruce says:
September 7, 2010 at 2:01 pm

Dr. King's niece was one of Beck's speakers. Even after Southern Democrats killed both her father and her uncle, I didn't hear anything other than the message of faith that her uncle lived every day.

By the way, Al Sharptoon is not an ordained minister. He claims that someone showed up at his house when he was little and annointed him a minister. What a bunch of horse crap! He's just using it to escape income taxes and steal millions from the stupid sheep that follow him! He's nothing but a common white collar criminal. As long as he keeps "gettin' his," the rest of his brothers and sisters be damned!

Linky Drake says:
September 7, 2010 at 6:09 pm

Neither the Lincoln Memorial nor August 28th are black folk's private property.

Dr. King's dream was for 'black folks and white folks, Protestants and Catholics, Jews and Gentiles' to join together in the symphonic sweetness of brotherhood, and together ALL would say 'Free at last, free at last, thank God A'mighty, I'm free at last!'

What do you call women and black people who support the conservative movement? I don't know either (though i'm inclined to say, "plebeian"), because it's so ignorant to align yourself with the same movement that supported and fought for slavery, fought against women's rights, civil rights, business regulation, immigration, etc…

Historically, the conservative movement is the BANE of this country's existence. Have a nice day, plebeians…

Earl Porterfield says:
September 13, 2010 at 10:21 am

The conservative movement has held black, women, this entire country back. its the conservative movement (not democrat party or republican party because historically they both have been both). I will NEVER understand why black people (or women) (or anyone for that matter) would ever align themselves with the conservative movement. Historically, the conservative movement has supported slavery, opposed civil rights, women rights, business regulation, immigration, etc. IT IS the BANE of this country's existence. The BANE!
