 //  The Soul of America

Posted on Thursday, March 11th, 2010 by Kevin Jackson

There is a rule that nobody talks about your Mama!  Yet today, blacks unwittingly do what we would never allow anybody else to do–at least without a fight–and that is talk our mothers down.  It happens every time somebody talks America down.

If American women in general are the heart of America, black women are certainly its soul.  Aside from running the household for many white women back in the mid-1900’s, black women were the confidantes of the ladies of the house for whom many black women worked as servants, caretakers, nannies, and maids.

In these roles black women were privy to and entrusted with the most critical information.  The white women of yesteryear told our mothers and grandmothers their deepest darkest secrets, things they may not share with anyone, not even their own mothers.  Black women were in many cases these women’s closest friends and staunchest allies.

I watched this type of relationship develop between my grandmother and Betty, the matriarch of the family for whom she worked.  That relationship was most evident when Betty’s grand-daughter Ramona was killed in a tragic accident on the ranch where I grew up—the ranch that Betty owned.

I recall my grandmother made the phone call to Betty to explain that the welds had failed on the seats mounted on one of the hunting vehicles.  Ramona and her boyfriend seated outside, riding essentially on the hood of the vehicle had been run over.  The young man was killed instantly, Ramona died shortly thereafter.

Betty flew in on her private jet to the small airstrip outside of Brady, where a sheriff’s vehicle waited to bring her to the ranch. I was told that my grandmother held Betty in her arms, comforting her, when Betty whispered to my grandmother, “I don’t know what I would do without you. You’re my best friend.” Those scenarios played out in many homes all across America back then.

Black women of yore taught respect in their homes.  Children were raised to understand that the world is watching, so you must behave.  We were constantly reminded of those who came before us, like Jesse Owens, Joe Louis, Jackie Robinson, Wilma Rudolph, Althea Gibson, and many other black “firsts.” Our decorum was patterned after such black gentlemen and ladies.  It started with how one greeted one’s elders.

Black women taught black children to show deference to elders no matter their color by calling them Sir or Ma’am.  To do so to whites was not to kowtow, but to show them that no matter how you treat us, we will always take the high ground, though many white children called black men and women boy or girl…or worse.

I recall the first time I heard one of my white friends—age eleven—curse his father for telling the child to hurry up.   I was amazed that his father hadn’t “knocked him into next week,” because I could picture the back of my grandmother’s hand approaching my face like a slow-motion dollyshot had I said what my friend said.  I assure you that I would have only been able to picture it in my mind’s eye, because it would have happened too quickly for me to see the shot with my naked eye!

Black women of that generation raised two families…theirs and the children of the families for whom they worked.  Because of this, black women raised many of the white leaders of today, male and female.  Black women taught young white children lessons of life, things that white parents were unable to teach.  There was something about white children seeing black women’s work ethic that made them listen to our women.

Black women kept their families nuclear.  In 1950 78 percent of black families had two parents (married couple), and only 18 percent were single parent (female householder, no husband present) homes.  By 1991, only 48 percent of black families were dual-parent homes, while 46 percent were single mother homes. In the decade since 1991, both statistics have gotten dramatically worse.

Back then black women raised men, not boys!  Sons had responsibilities and were accountable, and mothers cautioned against unchaste women.  Men picked women who reminded them of their mothers, and with rare exception men knew where all their children were.  Men supported their families until the day they died.

Black women of that era taught independence and scoffed at the idea of welfare.  They raised young ladies, not promiscuous girls.  Education was stressed, and blacks in prison were the exception, not the rule.

Here’s the wrap:

Liberals will argue that lives of blacks since the 1950’s have improved dramatically, and financially life certainly did improve for blacks. However it had nothing to do with Liberal Democrats; it was due to the policies of Republicans!  With Republican policies in place, blacks were headed for what could only be described as The Black Renaissance.  The 1950’s black person was trusted, and believe it or not one of the most respected people of the time.

Had blacks not bought into the policies of the Democrats, like FDR and LBJ, I contend that blacks would have proportionate representation in things like business ownership, home ownership, getting our fair share—and it would be without government handouts or interference, based on merit.   That conclusion was just a matter of time.

Had the Democrats not implemented the Raw Deal and The InGrate Society, blacks would not have the worst statistics for high-school dropout rates, college entrance rates, and college graduation rates—blacks lead negatively in all three categories.

The demise of the black community came the same way one puts on weight…one ounce at a time.    Democrats accomplished it the same way they have done things for decades…baby steps.  Despite the best efforts of black women, blacks have been lab rats for years in Democrats’ social experimentation.

The experiment failed in helping blacks, but then helping blacks was never the intent—the Democrat agenda of tricking generations of blacks was the real intent.

Democrats didn’t trick all blacks, however.  A few of us escaped through the holes in the net.

As for me, I love America. When I think about America, I get warm and fuzzy feelings about my grandmother.  Because her legacy indeed represents the soul of America.

Oh, and nobody talks about my Mama!

Well Kevin…I am going to talk about your Mama! And mine, too…you wrote the following in your essay:
“Children were raised to understand that the world is watching, so you must behave. ”
“Black women taught black children to show deference to elders no matter their color by calling them Sir or Ma’am. ”

“Back then black women raised men, not boys! Sons had responsibilities and were accountable, and mothers cautioned against unchaste women”

“Black women of that era taught independence and scoffed at the idea of welfare. They raised young ladies, not promiscuous girls.”

Kevin – MOST of us were raised/taught that way…Show deference to adults/elders; you were accountable – and not just for yourself – but others, too; independence & responsibility for self; God, family and country were the most important things in life; suck it up and be a man!
These were all attributes/moral ‘talents’ that were not only taught – but we were expected to live by!

You may be right in your assessment that things in the Black community may be better had you not followed the washingtonian pied pipers – but the bottom line here is this…WE the PEOPLE have all been duped and strayed away from what is right and decent. We must now pay the price of blindly following the Spocks & LBJs down the ‘ole social reform road.

@DaSicilian – Yes, I agree, that many children back then were raised that way. The issue is that the degradation of the least is the real cancer. When black kids began to stray, it was the beginning of America’s demise.

I have to agree with Kevin. I lived in St. Louis and Milwaukee most of my life and it’s sad that the “good” part of town is always where the white folks are. What happened? There’s parts of STL you’ll get shot for looking at someone cross-eyed. I just don’t get it….. It HAS to have something to do with their fathers not being around.

DaSicilian says:
March 11, 2010 at 2:55 pm

Kevin….that’s the point…You are making this just a ‘Black Experience’ …White, yellow, Italian (Ha! me) all began to stray….

and to Gregg’s point, too…divorce rate/single parent homes have flourished during this time…

Rosita says:

….another great rant…it was called “tough love” today’s parents want to be their child’s friend and many don’t want their child to “suffer” any of lifes’ lessons –though those lessons are priceless and make a better person….Ahhhhhhhh for the good old days (at least parts of them)

Stunning article Kevin…It took dignity and the faith of blacks to lay waste to the notion that someone should be judged on the pigment of their skin. I happen to believe the “Black Renaissance” will happen when conservative black thinkers are valued as they should be, as seekers and the speakers of truth. Kevin, it’s high time that more young blacks buy into the conservative American dream and stop listening to the doom and gloom shoveled by self-interested race merchants. A song lyric keeps popping into my mind….”With all the will in the world…diving for dear life…when we could be diving for pearls.”

You really lifted the veil up and reevaled some REAL Black folks stuff. The role of Black women as ambassadors without portfolio between Jim Crow America’s two polar opposites is well worth exploration and applause. Sisters like those described bear witness to the heights the human spirit can attain, even when laws and customs state otherwise.

Kevin, it seems every I am more impressed with every blog I read. What a terrific article. My family was blessed with a wonderful woman who filled the roles you described above and did indeed become a beloved and trusted friend to my parents while helping to raise my brothers and I. She died one weekend while looking after us when our patents were out of town. For decades after she was gone my mom and dad would lament her loss, saying “God doesn’t make people like Mattie anymore”. Respect, dignity, and much more we learned from her. Kudos to you for championing those values and speaking the truth as you do.

Kevin and folks,

I work for a school district in So. Calif. I have seen the disrespect that some kids have for adults and others. I agree, if my Father caught wind of anything I did wrong from anybody it would be tough to sit for awhile. On the good side I have been told how good my kid has been at the school and how respectful she is. I guess what I am saying is, at home they can be trying to their parents but the real test is how they act in the real world and so far mine has passed the test.

Unless my Discerning circuits have eroded, this little item is gonna have more infuriated demons coming outa the woodwork than a Sarah Palin fly-over. This is NOT the kind of “black history” that whitey is supposed to hear. This is NOT the kind of black history that Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton and whatever the real name of the president is….want to hear. This is the Forbidden Fruit to the Democrats: this is the black history of assimilation. This is the black history of people trying to toss off the “culture” of living in the dirt surrounded by hyenas and jackels and dead animals out on the plains and howls in the night from a thousand different directions from four-legged monsters and finding themselves in a world where it’s possible to have a damned washing machine and a car and learning how to make one’s way in this new world. This is NOT what Obama wants to hear preached. Obama wants to hear the black history of throwing off the chains of oppression. Osama Obama and Carping Sharpton and Messy Jesse want to hear the black history of rising up against the oppressor white man and turning America back into an animal-inhabited plains where these three idiots can feel a lot more comfortable wearing
zebra skins and dragging clitorectomied 14 year old girls off into the tent to hump. And this little post of yours is going to put a big teakwood log in front of that train. You mark my words, whatever that expression means, all hell’s gonna break loose because of this post. Sounds like fun, don’t it? WOO HOO!!!

Kevin, Great article. The last good senator from NY Daniel Patrick Moynihan warned of the problems that were facing the black community and today we’re “reaping the benefits” of that. It’s now over 40 years of these idiotic policies and we’ve wasted generations black children. Just witness the high school dropout rate in the black community. In my opinion along with rewarding women to have babies and not have fathers living at home, affirmative action has been one of the worse policies of this country. I believe had affirmative action not existed blacks would have figured out that they better have an education if they wanted to compete.

The Demo-RATS have Plantation Politics in full grear straight at the heart of the black race. They don’t even try yo hide it anymore and black voters have been so” dumbed down” over the years in the commie education system, and entitlement programs that are just a smoke screen to take their dignity and self esteem. I have black friends that I told them Martin Luthur King was a registered Republican and never intended the system to be this way. They told me I was lying, to get them to vote Republican. And remember the RINO Re-pukes that are in congress now are no better than the Demo-rats. We need to get all incumberts and career congress out and start with people that believe in the Constitution.

Brilliant -as usual !
And let’s not forget the Nurses. I’ve never been able to forget… or thank…Mrs Adams – the private-duty nurse that cared for me after never-before-tried spinal surgery in 1969 at Columbia Presbyterian Med center.
She spoiled me as if I was her own kid – pushing my wheelchair around Harlem, buying ice cream and pizza… and probably breaking a few rules.
Despite a dire prognosis, I turned out fine.
So, for me – the image of a black woman was always of someone who was both strong, and warm.

heres my two cents if you read through the whole post from the black sphere, and two pieces by sultan kinish,

http://sultanknish.blogspot.com/2010/03/i-won.html

http://sultanknish.blogspot.com/2010/03/barack-hussein-obama-vs-israel.html

barack obama is an extremely angry man who is not developed into an adult. he is not well adjusted. he was raised partly in a muslim country as a child, he has no real alegiance to this country he just lives here now and found it convenient to aquire power politically here. once here as a young child after leaving the only homeland he knew (a muslim one) he was raised by his white grandmother who he (to tie this back to the black sphere post) he repeatedly disrespected in politcal speaches and through under the bus. then made no time to go to her funeral when she passed away. argue with this analisis if you want, but she represented mom, and he used her as a prop and tossed her.

he has repeatedly apologized for this country and he has repeatedly groveled for foriegn leaders first among those is the saudi king, by bowing. and he is viciously undermining our best allies around the world. such as england, colombia, honduras, and last but not least israel

these patterns are solidifying they are no fluke or bumbling accident,

he does not ACT in a manor that tells us he love his mother or his country.

he conducts himself in a manor completely antihetical to america’s interests,

he has been carrying water for tyrannts around the globe and he has been positioning himself as the best friend of the muslim world.
he shows contempt for average americans the producers of our society. his policies are designed to drive up home heating costs gasoline, electric power, and he has put us into debt to the world beyond anything ever seen and he wants to double down on that. it could bankrupt this country.

so im asking, who is this guy? why have we put this un american man in office.

Great stuff Kevin. I find it interesting when I see young thug types wearing the Malcolm X tee shirts. I can only hope they have actually read what he had to say. While true in his early days he espoused the white’s are devils theology, he modified those beliefs somewhat in his latter days. He had some hard things to say to the Black community at large. It was his contention that Blacks needed to stop taking hand outs and entitlements. He said the Black community needed to stand or fall on it’s own merits. That unless a people were free to fail they were not free at all. I believe this applies across the color spectrum. When you take any group of people be they white, black or sepia toned, and single them out as underprivileged and introduce (force) them to a welfare mentality and subject them to handouts and entitlements (the scariest words any ethnic group can hear is, “Hi I’m from the govt. and I’m here to help you”) you begin to rob people of their independence, their dignity and creativity and self worth. Be interested in your comments about Malcolm X.

Talk about talking down your mother!!! You are dissing and reviling your own mother everytime you deny your roots by your hateful racist ramblings. You are also disowning your grandparents with each invective you hurl at people of their values. I guess you prefer to be an orphan begging your bread at the hands of the slave masters who for years regarded your ancestors as sub-human chattel.

torah2 says:

Coral,

My ancestors never owned slaves-didn’t even live on this continent then. They came to this country as dirt poor immigrants and worked hard labor all of their lives with very little to show for it. But their sacrifice allowed me to be born an “American”-something that a lot of people consider an honor.

I’ll be proud of ANY of my sons if they grow up with the courage and integrity that Kevin seems to have and from Kevin’s article, it is obvious that his grandparents taught him to value ALL human beings, even if they are white.

I’d share my bread with Kevin AND you willingly, and I’ve never viewed anyone of any race as sub-human chattel.

P.S. You are aware that historical records indicate that the Confederate states were predominantly DEMOCRATS (who were against emancipating slaves) while the northern states of the Union were predominantly Republican. I’d be careful which “values” I assign to whom.

good stuff and rings true my wife was taken care of for a few years in her childhood by her grandmothers housekeeper. She has fond memories of the lady.

This is really great stuff. I am so tired of race being an issue in this country it should be about prosperity for all citizens thriving in a free market. Prosperity makes for good neighbors.

Wow, Kevin, great commentary. You have articulated what I've been trying to explain to people. The demise of our societal values is a direct result of the Democrat policies of yore. I'm in Detroit and I don't have to tell you what has happened to this once-great city. True, the problems of the auto industry have had a hand in our problems, but that's still no reason for values to go flip-flop. The black leaders are corrupt and have been stealing from their own people for over 40 years now, the school board has an illiterate for a Board President (this is true!), the former Mayor is being investigated under RICO act, and a city council member has been found guilty of bribe-taking. And the Feds are investigating scads more! So these are the kinds of "Leaders" black children are keeping an eye on. Just great. As for black fathers, they're uneducated, unemployable so what wisdom and experience can they expound on their children? Sad, sad, sad.
