In the tradition of the classic Washington “document dump,” the Senate last week took advantage of the public’s attention on a massive snow storm to fast-track a bill that would give Barack Obama sweeping new powers and potentially allow him to stay in office beyond his administration’s January 2017 expiration date.
The bill, Senate Joint Resolution 26, was authored by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC). The official purpose of the bill is to authorize the use of military force against the Islamic State. However, its vague language would give Obama sweeping new controls of the U.S. military and de facto martial law powers, the very power that give authority to the chief executive to suspend elections in a time of crisis.
Grassroots organizations were not distracted by the storm and are enraged at the bill. Groups such as Pray for Us are encouraging Americans to contact their representatives to protest the legislation.
“It is illegitimate in our constitutional republic for total control of the military and war powers to reside in Obama’s hands–or any other chief executive,” said Charles Benninghoff of Pray for Us. “That authority resides with “we the people” through our Representatives — which is why Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham and Barack Obama want to subvert that power for themselves.”
Much as members of the Black Panthers patrolled voting centers in 2008—with the mildest of reprimands from Eric Holder’s Justice Department—Obama under SRC 26 could legally deploy armed soldiers to the same polling stations.
Did SCOTUS make the right decision on medical mandates for large businesses?
The government has certainly fed into certain insecurities. A while back the Fed purchased large amounts of riot gear and other military equipment, and supposedly has readied detention centers, for what purpose is unsure. They have purchased massive amounts of ammunition, and the list goes on.
Ironically, for Obama to stay in office, he would have to pretend to fight the very people many Americans believe he is supporting. But it would only take a few terrorist activities within America to invoke the resolution that gives Obama even more power. It might be a longshot; but with Obama we can never let our guard down.
