Leftist Mayor of St Louis Trades GROCERIES for Guns
Apparently St. Louis’ new mayor Lyda Krewson believe criminals need her to eat.
I’m not surprised this white Leftist want to try a new twist on a failed policy of turning in guns. Every time Leftists do this trade, they get a lot of non-functioning guns, and a few good-meaning citizens-turned-soon-to-be-victims.
The twist on the St. Louis version of voluntary gun-control, the reward is groceries.
As Breitbart reports,
St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson (D) is reacting to the rising crime in her city by offering to give people groceries in exchange for their firearms.
She will do this via the kind of buyback program that Democrats in other cities have unsuccessfully implemented around the country.
Krewson believes trading guns for food will help her little violence problem.
The city revels in high crime, as North St. Louis habitually makes the “Top 10” in violent crime. And then across the river there lies the infamous East St. Louis, just as deadly as its much bigger brother.
Including 188 homicides, there were 5,762 violent crimes in St. Louis in 2015. Adjusting for population, the city’s murder and violent crime rates, at 59 murders and 1,817 per 100,000 city residents, are each the highest in the country. The number of violent crimes reported in St. Louis increased by 7.7% last year, faster than the national uptick of 3.9%. Over the last five years, however, the incidence of violent crime is down by 3.2%.
And in the wake of yet another controversial cop shooting, the city awaits its fate, as the crime rate will undoubtedly rise.
Those are not good stats. And all the groceries in the world won’t impact those numbers.
But when you look inside the numbers, things worsen.
On December 8, 2017, KSDK reported that St. Louis had witnessed more murders in 2017 than in any year since 1995. On December 11 the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department listed the number of murders, year-to-date, at 197.
The SLMPD shows that 185 of those 197 murders were carried out with firearms. One hundred sixty-two of the victims were black males and 22 were black females. Ten victims were Hispanic. One hundred twenty-seven of the suspects in the killings were black, and one suspect was white.
Victims were predominantly aged 20-29. Victims aged 30-39 made up the second largest group.
What the mayor says next is striking.
According to Newsweek, Mayor Krewson commented,
“We can’t incarcerate our way out of this situation.”
So she plans to offer the citizens of St. Louis grocery cards in exchange for their guns. She also plans to increase funding for recreational activities.
We can incarcerate the violence out, but we can feed it out of them?
Note that Krewson’s solution involves no changing of habits of gunmen. For her, the gun is the obvious problem, not the person using the gun. So if she takes away the guns, the crimes will stop. The perps won’t use knives or fists.
Using her logic, if people were being beaten up with fist, Krewson would offer to exchange fists for groceries.
We will follow up on this program, though you know how things turn out.
