Joe Biden announced his run for the presidency; his third. And he finds himself in trouble already.
Well, actually Biden’s troubles began before decades ago. They’ve only resurfaced after he refused to stay out of politics.
I wrote a while back that being Obama’s VP was his reward for years of being a mediocre politician. Why try to outdo that? Look what happened to Hillary Clinton.
But Biden reminds me of a punch-drunk ex-prize fighter. He just doesn’t know when to quit. So if anybody will find out that he’s not as good as his resume, it will be Biden.
He doesn’t realize it yet, but he will be the poster child for Democrat women of color. Biden represents all that the Democrats no longer want, as does the current leader of the Pack of 20, Bernie Sanders.
Women of color want something different from Democrats.
As Mail.com reports,
“I know that we have been cultured to feel that only the white man can save us,” the LaMarque, Texas, organizer said Wednesday. “I just don’t feel like Biden is our answer.” Biden’s candidacy is likely to reshape the Democratic race, which has put the party’s diversity on display. The group of eight 2020 hopefuls who spoke at the forum was comprised of one black man, one black woman, three other women, a Latino man and two white men, all making the case for why they should be the nominee.
Black female voters will play a critical role in the Democratic Party’s attempt to defeat President Donald Trump in 2020. An inability to earn their support in past cycles has spelled political peril for Democratic candidates. For his part, Biden has maintained strong ties to the African American community over the decades.
The raucous, standing-room crowd in the 1,800-person capacity auditorium at the historically black Texas Southern University listened intently as the candidates were questioned about maternal mortality, immigration, tribal sovereignty, income inequality and other issues. Attending were Sen. Cory Booker, former Obama Cabinet member Julian Castro, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Sen. Kamala Harris, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren.
LaTosha Brown, the co-founder of Black Voters Matter, said she was initially eager for Biden to enter the race but now sees “strong alternatives” to him. “I’m over white men running the country,” Brown said. “I don’t know if him getting in changes the field. He has name recognition, but his strength is also his weakness. Who is his announcing going to surprise?”
Oh the sweet irony. Just a short two-plus years ago, Democrats tried something different, namely Hillary Clinton. We all know the outcome.
Apparently, Democrats didn’t just need a woman; they needed a woman of color.
In case you missed it, I’m saying this gathering rings of Kamala Harris. A shot over the bow of Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, and all the other men, including GAY MEN, Mr. Buttigieg.
While the big arc of the Democrats’ strategy will be “Defeat Trump”, they struggle with internal wars. And those wars will expose just how divided the Democrats are, save the big arc.
And the Democrats have two other major problems looming.
First, the follow-up to the Mueller Report potentially torpedoes everybody with a “D” after their names. Second, Donald Trump not only has performed like a rock star in his first term. But Trump also won’t let the Democrats get a foothold on anything.
Look at what President Trump has taken away from them.
Criminal justice reform. Talk about a major issue for blacks. And Trump has the bona fides to prove he wasn’t all talk. Add to this the fact that Baby black Jesus, Barack Obama did nothing, and Biden can talk Charlottesville until he’s blue in the face.
And what of comprehensive immigration reform? Trump gave Democrats three-times what they requested for DACA, and they turned him down.
Back to Biden.
Joe Biden will get the lesson of his political life. I predicted he wouldn’t run, but added that he would be smart not to run. And if Joe Biden is anything, he certainly is D-U-M-B. So he’s running.
But unlike the coronation of Hillary Clinton, the DNC won’t back Biden in the way they did Hillary Clinton. No cheating or other shenanigans. This primary fight will be based on who can gain traction with the base. What nag would you bet on?
Democrats can’t count on the black vote. And if they put in another white male, they will lose much of the black female vote. Talk about being between a rock and a hard place.
