In what amounts to yet another genius move, the President denied military aircraft to Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
If she wants to visit other countries on the taxpayers’ dime, she will have to wait. Or she can buck up and pay for the visit herself.
According to Fox News:
President Trump on Thursday appeared to deny military aircraft to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for a foreign trip just minutes before the congressional delegation was set to depart, in a stunning response to her call to delay the State of the Union address amid the government shutdown.
In a curt letter, Trump said her trip has been “postponed.”
“Due to the Shutdown, I am sorry to inform you that your trip to Brussels, Egypt, and Afghanistan has been postponed. We will reschedule this seven-day excursion when the Shutdown is over. In light of the 800,000 great American workers not receiving pay, I am sure you would agree that postponing this public relations event is totally appropriate,” Trump wrote.
“I also feel that, during this period, it would be better if you were in Washington negotiating with me and joining the Strong Border Security movement to end the Shutdown. Obviously, if you would like to make your journey by flying commercial, that would certainly be your prerogative.”
President Trump knows how to fight. And he put Pelosi in the corner.
She and other Democrat clowns just came back from partying in Puerto Rico, as 800,000 federal employees weren’t getting checks. And Trump didn’t let her forget that, in an indirect way.
Further, Trump’s obvious reference to Pelosi’s call to “postpone” the State of the Union speech, was quite frankly, “Mwah!”.
Essentially Pelosi has no recourse but the fly commercial, as Trump suggested. And she wouldn’t dare lower herself to that. The level of security she needs to travel is geometrically more than President Trump. So she needs a military escort just to make sure she returns home.
CNN’s Jim Acosta called the president “childish”. As usual, Acosta proves that he’s childish, because President Trump canceled his trip to Iraq, as well as a trip scheduled by Republicans.
Further, according to his own network, this is within the president’s prerogative:
The President of the United States has the authority to direct the Defense Department to not use military assets to support a congressional delegation to military theaters. This support includes air transport and additional security procedures.
In another part of her message to the president, Pelosi wrote:
“I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after the government has re-opened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on January 29.”
Who was being childish?
What was the purpose of this trip?
According to a Pelosi spokesman, Drew Hammill tweeted:
“The purpose of the trip was to express appreciation & thanks to our men & women in uniform for their service & dedication, & to obtain critical national security & intelligence briefings from those on the front lines.”
Trust me. The troops can do without this visit.
