In American politics, Republicans have mostly played not to lose.
They’ve run safe, predictable draws up the middle. They punt on 4th and one, and mostly settle for field goals.
For far too long their strategy is based mainly on a fear of failure or offending. They’ve maintained a timid hope that the other side will make a mistake before the clock runs out.
Then there’s Donald Trump.
Trump doesn’t play not to lose. He plays to win. Moreover, he wants to be the feature for the highlight reel.
And Trump is the true anomaly. He’s the head coach who is also a player. And who needs a staff when you are only care about offense and special teams.
So Trump is not just player, and head coach. He runs the offense. And during the 4 year hiatus, he revamped the game. He spotted a fatal flaw in the opposing defense’s formation. Now, in his second term he licks his chops on every formation, because he knows he’s about to burn the Democrats for another 80-yard touchdown.
The Democrats, for their part only have one defensive strategy: the Prevent Defense.
It’s the soft, passive scheme you use when you’re terrified of a single big play. You drop everyone into coverage, you give up short yards, and you pray the clock saves you. It’s a defense that protects against a spectacular loss but almost guarantees a slow, demoralizing defeat. It is, in short, the perfect metaphor for a political party that is so busy defending its turf that it’s forgotten how to actually play the game.
Sadly for Democrats, no matter what defensive scheme they adopt, it fails. Because Trump’s offensive scheme showcases a thing of beauty. He’s managed to get the opposing players to join. It’s like a receiver for the Democrats running to the wrong end zone.
Trump’s game plan attacks the Democrats at their weakest points. And in looking over the defense, Trump has targeted the Democrats weak secondary: Democrat-run cities.
Who will he go after next?
BREAKING NEWS: Moments ago – President Trump officially announced Portland, Oregon is NEXT on The List! 🎉

While the defense guesses, Trump runs precise routes designed to exploit the coverage.
The out route: challenging the D.C. establishment right in its own endzone. The post pattern: taking aim deep at Chicago, a city so mismanaged it makes DC look like Utopia.
And what of the seam route: splitting the difference and targeting Portland, where ideology has consistently tackled common sense for a loss.
The defensive secondary—comprised of mayors, blue-state governors, and a clueless commentariat—is completely lost. They’re guessing wrong at every snap. They’re expecting a run, so he passes. They expect a short play to the sidelines, so he goes deep. They’re committing penalties out of sheer frustration, screaming about states’ rights and the Tenth Amendment, a play they haven’t run since the last time a Republican was in the White House.
The brilliance of the play call is that it forces the defense to defend the entire field. By merely hinting at federal intervention in Chicago or Portland, Trump isn’t just gaining yards; he’s shifting the entire line of scrimmage. The Democrats are left scrambling, forced to defend a record of soaring homicide rates and urban decay that is, by any objective measure, indefensible. Their only move is to cry foul, to argue that the referee—in this case, the Constitution—should stop the play. But the crowd sees the open receiver. They see the touchdown in the making.
Who needs defense?
Trump has no defensive coordinator, because he doesn’t need a defense. Ironically, no matter what situation arises, Trump can leave his offense on the field. And here’s why.
Once Trump scores, his offense shifts to special teams. They kick off, and the Democrats start their return. Inevitably, they fumble the ball; every time. The Trump special teams fall on the ball, and resume offense.
Minority voters erupt in cheers.
For decades, the Democrats’ star players who have been running option routes for a party that never throws them the ball. Trump treats minorities different; like humans.
Trump tosses them perfect spirals right. He gives the game ball to communities that have been left utterly unprotected by their old team. The Democrats have assumed these voters are locked into a long-term contract, loyal no matter how many times they’re sacked by failed policies. Trump is betting everything that they’re free agents looking for a winning team.
The outcome of the game isn’t even in doubt anymore. The Prevent Defense always fails against a great offense.
The Democrats are left with grass stains and whiplash, as they watch replay after replay on the Jumbotron. They see Trump spike the football so much, they think it’s a repeat. But then they see the score: 100 to 0.
