Let’s see how long this latest Leftist idea lasts. Because like almost all Leftists ideas, this too shall end bad.
Holy Mother of George Zimmerman, what could these Leftists possibly be thinking? Defund the police and send social workers to respond to 911 calls?
That’s what New Mexico’s largest city has decided to do, according to Fox News:
The decision came as Black Lives Matter advocates to defund police departments in the wake of the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died in police custody after Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes on May 25.
Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller announced that the city would create a “first-of-its-kind” cabinet-level department that would respond to calls on inebriation, homelessness, addiction and mental health.
“We’ve placed more and more issues on the plates of officers who are not trained — despite their best efforts and despite some training — they’re not totally trained to be a social worker, or to be an addiction counselor, or to deal with things around child abuse when they’re just answering a call,” Keller said. “We should have trained professionals do this, instead of folks with a gun and a badge.”
Keller, a Democrat, said the new group, Albuquerque Community Safety, would refocus millions of dollars through the budget process into a public health model with a civilian-based response. He added that the new model will allow police officers to focus their time on violent crime.
Great idea, right? Because if somebody needs assistance against a violent crime, an unarmed social worker is just what the doctor ordered.
I believe this new tactic is Albuquerque admitting that it prefers the citizens pay for their own policing. While the city will still want its tax dollars for the non-policing, understand that citizens will be on their own when it comes to solving crimes.
Maybe Albuquerque is on to something?
After all, if citizens know no cop will be sent to save the day, perhaps they will act on their own. Say somebody breaks in your house and 911 only gets you Bernice the social worker? Do you see that I’m getting at?
Out of curiosity I’m wondering, “Who will protect the unarmed social worker, once he or she arrives?”
Who would want that job? I dare the city of Albuquerque show their new “social police” videos of what real cops deal with on a daily basis, and then see if anybody wants that job.
