DOJ Shutting Down Trump’s “China Initiative”

Is the "Strategy for Countering Nation-State Threats" Enough?

Tensions are mounting in Washington, DC. Protesters are calling for an end to Trump’s “China Initiative.” And the replacement strategy might not be effective. However, we shall soon find out.

The Department of Justice verified that its “China Initiative” is being replaced by a new “broader approach.” However, the specifics are somewhat vague. In fact, some question whether this new approach will stay focused on the threats China poses.

Fox News adds:

The China Initiative was started in 2018 under the Trump administration to protect U.S. national security against Chinese spying on U.S. intellectual property and in academia. The DOJ website said it was aimed at “identifying and prosecuting those engaged in trade secret theft, hacking, and economic espionage,” as well as “protecting our critical infrastructure against external threats through foreign direct investment and supply chain compromises.”

That program is coming to an end. In its place, the DOJ is instituting a new “Strategy for Countering Nation-State Threats.”

“Our goal with this strategy is to take a comprehensive approach that draws on the full extent of our tools and authorities to address the alarming rise in illegal activity from hostile nations,” Assistant Attorney General Matthew Olsen of the DOJ’s National Security Division said. “This includes growing threats within the United States and to Americans and U.S. businesses abroad.”

Olsen said “the current threat landscape demands a broader approach,” and cited not just China, but Iran, Russia, and North Korea.

“These nations seek to undermine our core democratic, economic, and scientific institutions,” he continued. “And they employ a growing range of tactics to advance their interests and to harm the United States. Defending American institutions and values against these threats is a national security imperative and a priority for the Department.”

Orange Man Bad

They’ll never admit it, but clearly Leftists just needed another Trump policy to tear apart. Trump built border security, Biden reversed it. Trump added jobs, Biden ruined them. Obviously, Trump stimulated the economy while Biden destroyed it. Not to mention the energy independence Trump gave us, and Biden pulverized. But China is even more important to Biden that any of the pressing issues we face such as Bidenflation or climbing crime rates.

Furthermore, Biden doesn’t mind being made a fool on a global stage- displaying his incompetence in Afghanistan or the Ukraine. And Biden doesn’t care if Putin makes him look small and weak. However, the President does care about China. Because they bought and paid for a president. And Biden’s hoping for a repeat customer.

Attorney General Merrick Garland knows what we’re up against. Sadly, he doesn’t seem hell bent on restoring the rightful balance of power. Instead, he seems swayed by liberals with posterboards.

Fox adds:

Garland is under increasing pressure from academics across the country to end The China Initiative, a Department of Justice program formed in 2018. It is designed to confront Chinese espionage.

Protesters stood outside the Department of Justice this week, begging for an end to the 3-year-old program.

“Stop the China Initiative as we know it. Catch the spies, not the Chinese American scientists,” Haipei Shue, the president of United Chinese Americans, told Fox News.

Garland, who has yet to make a decision, on Oct. 27 testified on Capitol Hill and spoke about Chinese government espionage.

“The People’s Republic of China is a serious threat to our intellectual property. They represent a serious threat with respect to espionage,” Garland said.

Just this week, 192 Yale professors wrote and signed a letter to Garland, arguing the strategy contains “fundamental flaws” and is problematic on many levels, including racial profiling.

“Without open science and international collaboration, American science and technology can only suffer, and it causes brain drain,” Jeremy Wu with Asian Pacific American Justice told Fox News.

National security and law enforcement officials both insist the controversial initiative is about stopping Chinese government harm, plain and simple.

“China is closing in on us. They’re up to about 75%, or even 80% of the size of our economy already, and the way they’re doing this is better technology that they developed and also that they steal,” China expert Michael Pillsbury told Fox News.

Garland called for a review into the DOJ approach to dealing with the Chinese government. His spokesman says that review should be completed in the coming weeks.

Another Waste of Time

Can we just be honest here? Garland doesn’t need a review. What he needs to do is look at Trump’s policy, and go with it. Or even tighten it up a bit. What Garland should NOT do is abandon Trump’s plan. Sucking up or selling out to China might make the current president happy. But it won’t make America great again. And it sure won’t build back better.
