So, school choice is good enough for her kids, but not for the peasants who can’t afford private tuition? This is the Left’s education philosophy in a nutshell: Rules for thee, but not for me.
“I Pulled Myself Up By My Bootstraps (But You Shouldn’t Get Help)”
Buckner’s reasoning was as tone-deaf as it gets. She proudly proclaimed that she and her husband worked hard to pay for private school—implying that parents stuck in failing public schools just aren’t hustling hard enough.
“But I never came to the state, I never went to an agency and said, ‘give me some money to pay my way.’ I went to work and I paid the way with my husband to put them [children] where they needed to be to achieve what they needed to achieve,” Buckner said.
Ah, the classic bootstraps argument—except when she used school choice, it was earned. But when poor and working-class families want the same opportunity, suddenly it’s welfare.
This is the same party that lectures Republicans about “privilege” and “equity.” Yet Democrats have no problem creating an academic caste system where wealthy Democrats enjoy private education while forcing everyone else into failing government schools.
“You Vill Go to the Government School—AND YOU VILL LOVE IT!”
The bill in question, The Georgia Promise Scholarship Act, would provide $6,500 vouchers to students trapped in the state’s worst-performing schools (those in the bottom 25%). This would allow parents to transfer their kids to better schools—public or private—while forcing failing institutions to improve or lose funding.
But Democrats, in their infinite wisdom, oppose it. Why? Because control. They don’t trust parents to make decisions for their own children. Instead, they believe bureaucrats should dictate where kids go to school—unless, of course, you’re a Democrat with the means to opt out.
Republican Rep. Mesha Mainor, who left the Democratic Party last year over their hostility to school choice, called out the absurdity:
“In District 56, some of these schools have 2-3% reading and math proficiency, which means 97-98% can’t read or do math, but yet some of our colleagues want to tell you that it is okay.”
And who’s stuck in these failing schools? Mostly minority and low-income students—the very people Democrats claim to champion. But when given the chance to empower these families, Democrats side with teachers’ unions and the education bureaucracy instead.
The Left’s Education Hypocrisy: A Tale as Old as Time
This isn’t new. From Joe Biden (who sent his kids to elite private schools) to Barack Obama (whose daughters attended Sidwell Friends), Democrats love school choice—when it benefits them. But for the rest of America? Tough luck.
Their message is clear:
- For the elites: Private schools, tutors, and every advantage money can buy.
- For the working class: Shut up and accept whatever crumbling, underperforming school the government assigns you.
It’s the ultimate “Let them eat cake” moment—except instead of cake, it’s a subpar education and a lifetime of diminished opportunities.
Conclusion: School Choice Is the Ultimate Equalizer
Democrats love to preach about equity—unless it means giving poor families the same opportunities they enjoy. School choice isn’t about “defunding public schools”—it’s about freeing families from a system that has failed them for decades.
If Debbie Buckner’s kids deserved a better education, so do yours. The only difference? She thinks she earned hers—while you should just know your place.
